Gold Medal in Telly Watching
Categories: Sport

Well it’s been a while hasn’t it? Mostly on account of juggling work, kids, bike hire companies!

However, I’ve found a bit of time this last week while I’ve been sat on me arse watching SPORT!

Yes, I know, ME, watching sport, on the telly – it’s a little bit mental.
I “do” sport – cant usually be arsed to watch the fucker aswell.

Let’s go back a few years, when it was announced that London had won the bid for 2012.
I remember watching it on telly & being pleased for “us”, yet at the same time not really giving much of a fuck.

Over the next few years, as they started to build the Olympic Park & there was all sorts of mental amounts of money being bandied about for the budget – I couldn’t help but think what a waste of frigging time & money for a few weeks of dull sport that will no doubt be badly organised.

Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t a fan but was still understanding of people who are & totally respect people wanting to be a part of it, watch it, buy tickets etc, it just isn’t (wasn’t) my bag ….

Fast forward to July 2012. I was in the French Alps when the opening ceremony kicked it all off. Didn’t really see much of anything over the 1st weekend – champagne, beer & beautiful scenery were kinda the priority really.

So I did Sky plus the ceremony (other TV providers are available) as I was quite interested in how Danny Boyle had done it.
Sat down to watch it on the Monday & was instantly BLOWN AWAY!

Jesus H Christ on a bike, that was pretty spectacular huh? Danny boy did us a bit proud there – utterly amazing, certainly a moment that goes down in history – my kids insisted on watching it again.
The pure energy that exuded from each & every performer. The whole story behind it, the history, the (subtle) politics – absolute genius.

Well, this lit something up in me, I thought “shit, if we’re that good at an opening ceremony, how great is this whole sport thing going to be?!”

I haven’t watched loads of it admittedly – mostly due to being at work (although in other news, 3/4 of my office can see a huge flat screen telly with Olympics broadcast all day long. I sit in the other 1/4 that can see FUCK ALL).

Anyway, this weekend, I’ve sat on my (currently) un-exercised arse & watched LOADS of sport. Loads of pretty random sport. Sport I’d never ever watched before.
Y’know what? It’s been bloody awesome!

I don’t profess to know what the hell is going on in it half the time but I have learned loads & watched in complete awe of these dedicated individuals who spend their whole lives trying to be the best that they possibly can.

How many of us can say we’ve ever applied that kind of dedication & commitment to anything we’ve ever tried to do?

I can’t say I’m going to start watching sport all the time – I possibly won’t.
The fact remains that this past week has switched something on – a new understanding & liking of spectator sport.

I would like to say a big fuck off to people who think people like me are just bandwagon jumpers of glory hunters.
If the Olympics does this to me & many others, perhaps it will encourage people to take up sport – this is a good thing in my book & should be applauded.

I’ll be a bit sad to see it all end really – although the Paralympics will be just as awesome (let’s just ignore the fact that it’s sponsored by arsehole bullshit fuckers Atos).

So let’s be proud, proud of our country for pulling this off but most of all proud of our athletes for being, well, just for being you …..

Oh & let’s get a new national anthem huh – something that truly represents our GREAT BRITAIN
